UPS and Protection

Almost all organisations will suffer some form of power disturbances each year. The number of these occurrences depends largely on factors outside of the organisations control such as the infrastructure in place from your service provider. Unfortunately there is very little if anything you can do in order to stop such disturbances. However, what you can do is ensure you are both protected and prepared for such disturbances in order to mitigate the risk they post to your organisation.

Power disturbances come in various formats such as power sag, power surge and power failure to name a few. Most of these disturbances occur outside of your organisation but it’s important to note that power failure, in particular, can also occur within your organisation.

Problems caused by power disturbances can include the loss or corruption of data, damage to equipment, loss of productivity and a downtime within your organisation, additional financial costs often associated with investigating and resolving the issue outside of normal business hours, decreases in customer satisfaction and often a loss in revenue. The impact of the above is varied depending upon the type of organisation and the industry they operate in.

It’s important for all organisations to be mindful of the risks associated with power disturbances and have an acute awareness of the impact is has to their operational performance. Once this is realised the next step should be to identify the hardware and equipment which requires protection, review what type of protection is required, calculate how much runtime is needed and look at optional items such as monitoring, reporting, automatic load-shedding and automatic data saving/shutdown applications. All of which will both protect and assist you in reducing the impact on your organisation caused by power disturbances.
